Hiking Trails

Hike the Umtanum Creek Canyon Trail. This 8.2-mile out-and-back trail is near Ellensburg, Washington. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 hours & 56 minutes to complete. This is a popular trail for backpacking, birding, and camping, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of the day. The best times to visit this trail are April through October. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

Rock Climbing

Vantage is primarily a destination for rock climbers, with the fascinating rock formations of the Gorge making for a great challenge to those wishing to hone their belaying skills. But nearby Frenchman Coulee allows hikers to enjoy the same surroundings with both feet planted firmly on the ground.

The trail is short but provides a nice view of the columnar basalt and a seasonal waterfall in the spring. Flowers festoon the area near the water, though various blossoms accompany you the entire length of the trail and keep you company on your way to the waterfall and back.

The Ellensburg Rodeo

Ellensburg cherishes a Wild West tradition and is the site of the state's major rodeo, occurring each year on Labor Day weekend. The Ellensburg Rodeo has been a town tradition since 1923, is the largest rodeo in Washington State, and is known as one of the best rodeos in North America.

The Gorge Amphitheater

Olmstead Place

State Park

In 1875, the pioneering Olmstead family homesteaded the land at the site of the current state park. They originally raised beef cattle. The family switched from beef to dairy cows in 1892, producing butter for the Seattle market. Three generations of the family farmed this land over many decades. Donated to State Parks in 1968, Olmstead Place reflects homesteader family life, and farming history, with historic equipment, a 1908 hay barn, and smaller barns, sheds, and coops that date from the late-19th century on into recent times. A tour of the original Cottonwood log cabin reveals fascinating historic furniture and artifacts.

Stroll through the beautiful heritage gardens, blooming with a profusion of flowers throughout the warm seasons—Meander down the Altapes Interpretive Trail, which lies along Coleman Creek. Check the online calendar for interpretive activities.
